They use the exact same EDGE and 3G circuits and the newer one will not download from the Internet any faster. The main difference in the 3Gs model is that it has a faster processor which can mean that web pages render faster and that some applications will run faster.

In many ways, the iPhone 3G is a better choice because it is so similar and now costs so much less than the newer version. Though certainly the new phone is a bit faster, it’s not going to make better phone calls or download internet information any faster. App developers will start to take advantage of the faster processor but they also realize that the number of people with the iPhone 3G and even the original iPhone is huge and will make sure that their applications provide a good experience on these older phones for a long time in the future.

If you are someone who just simply needs to have the latest and greatest gadget, this is primarily the reason to get the iPhone 3GS. It also has a slightly better camera and can record video, though these are not features that most people will use every day. It’s also possible that the iPhone 3Gs will have a higher resale value when the next generation of iPhone is released.
