The benefit that we all can enjoy in modern society is that we can work from home effectively and be there to raise your children. The internet and conference calling can turn any home office into a growing and strong business.

There has been a large shift from office based commuting to home based commuting. Working from home eliminates the stress of traffic to the office, inter office politics and missing a great deal of your home life. This has spawned a great deal of “work from home opportunities” that promise the dream lifestyles but deliver nightmares.

The price of wrong advice can be very costly and damage your reputation. It takes good judgment and patience to successfully work from home. There are a few essentials you need to prepare before working from your own.

1) Commitment: You need to be absolutely committed to make it work. There must not be any room for uncertainty.

2) Family: Your family has to be informed that even though you will be working from home, you will have a schedule to follow and they must honour it without leaving tasks to be done that interfere with your work. Trust me, the groceries can be bought like before you stayed at home. Not during the weekday when you should be working.

3) Clear goals: You must write clearly what you wish to achieve in the long, medium and short term. A good start is how much money do you wish to receive per month (especially if you wish to start you business). Remember, this is work not a hobby. You must make money by next month or risk going backwards. Then define your strengths, weaknesses and personal interests. You must research clearly how you can make money from your interests (they will keep you going in the rough months ahead).

After achieving the income you planned for 3 to 6 consecutive months without fail then you are able to indulge. You must also plan how you will invest the increased income to receive passive income. “Never put your eggs in one basket”. Investing in rental property that pays you regularly or reinvesting in adding more passive income from your business also helps build security.

4) Consult your team: This reason alone is why many online businesses and start-ups fail. Who should be on your team? Not your relatives or close friends unless they are the best. I work with this motto, “Cheap advice is worth… and free advice is worth even…”

You need a lawyer, accountant, banker and your spouse. Why spouse? Because spouses keep you consistent by being there despite the highs and lows. Your team will also remind you when you are emotionally invested in something that is not working and will easily pick up scams based on their own interpretation. That said you still have to make up you own mind after listening to their advice.

5) Start doing it.

You will learn better from trial and error than anybody can teach you in a seminar, e-book or course. Just make sure you test and compile data to see what works and what does not. You must pay attention to the results so that you do more of whatever works and less of what does not work.
